Main text Most Humble Report! In most humble report dated February 7th, 1818 I reported on the insubordination exhibited by lieutenant Ths. Maillard of Ostende Company at the parade on the high birthday of Your Majesty, and I now have the honor to forward the Interrogation of the militia and the judgment rendered by the Court Martial. I shall not for long dwell on all the rhetoric concerning the West Indian planters’ and white men’s sentiments concerning being closely associated with coloreds, on which Maillard not only based his defense but additionally his right, in this case, to be praised as the one who sacrifices himself for the public good. Except at gatherings of idle Creoles, the value of these harangues are understood throughout the civilized world. The presumption that such concessions to free coloreds caused the tragedy on St. Domingo is brazenly false, for the entire world -
